BBS Kirn – Our School
A vocational school in the heart of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
OID: E 10322495
The Berufsbildende Schule Kirn (BBS Kirn) is a vocational school in Kirn, Germany – one hour away from Frankfurt International Airport and 30 minutes from Hahn Airport. We offer both part-time vocational education and full-time educational programmes.
Our school combines general education, vocational skills and practical work experience. This makes us an excellent partner for international schools and organisations interested in Erasmus+ cooperation, vocational education and student or teacher mobility.
Our school at a glance
- 630 students
- 230 full-time students
- 400 part-time students
- 36 teachers, supported by a social worker and administrative staff
We have students from different educational and social backgrounds and age groups (15–21) and a strong focus on vocational education and preparation for working life.
How does vocational education work in Germany?
One important part of our school is dual vocational education.
Students have an apprenticeship contract with a company, receive a salary and learn in two places:
- at school, where they receive vocational and general education
- in a company, where they gain practical experience
At BBS Kirn, students usually spend around two days per week at school and three days at their company. Apprenticeships normally last around three years. The aim is to prepare students for successful employment after completing their apprenticeship.
Vocational fields at BBS Kirn
Our part-time vocational programmes include:
- Industrial mechanics
- Heating and plumbing technology
- Industrial and office administration
- Sales
- Automotive sales
- Tax consultancy
Full-time vocational education
In our full-time programmes, students can work towards different educational qualifications while developing vocational skills.
Our main vocational fields are:
- Business and Economics
- Health Care
- Engineering and Wood Technology
- Home Economics and Social Care
Our full-time programmes include:
- Vocational Preparation Year (BVJ)
- BVJ with a focus on German as a second language (BVJ-S)
- Vocational School I (BF 1)
- Vocational School II (BF 2)
- Higher Vocational School – Business (HBF)
These programmes offer students different opportunities to gain qualifications, discover their strengths, prepare for vocational training or continue their education at college or university.
Modern training facilities
Our full-time students have access to modern, professionally equipped workshops and training facilities. These include, for example:
- a modern woodwork workshop
- a metalwork workshop
- a professional training kitchen
These facilities allow students to gain hands-on practical experience and develop the vocational skills they need for their future careers. This strong practical focus complements classroom learning and helps prepare students for vocational training and the world of work.
Our students
A particularly important part of our work is supporting young people at the beginning of their educational and professional careers.
Many of our full-time students attend BVJ or BF 1. Their goal is to obtain a basic school qualification or continue towards a lower secondary qualification. These students have usually not completed their compulsory education at comprehensive schools but would like to focus on a rather practical approach to learning.
Students at our Higher Vocational School (HBF) – Business have a strong focus on practical learning and professional skills.
- Students can obtain their Advanced Technical College Entrance Qualification (Fachhochschulreife).
- They work with SAP and gain practical experience in business-related processes.
- A strong practical focus is ensured through regular work placements in companies. Students spend two days per week in a company for one full year.
- On a voluntary basis, students can also complete a four-week work placement abroad, giving them the opportunity to gain international work experience and develop their intercultural and language skills.
We also offer programmes for students who are new to Germany and are still learning German. This helps them develop their language skills and prepare for further education and employment.
Our priorities for school development
International cooperation is an important part of our school development.
Within our Erasmus+ activities as an accredited partner, we focus particularly on:
Sustainability
We want to strengthen education for sustainable development and encourage students to think about their responsibility for the environment and society.
Digitalisation and AI
We are exploring how digital technologies and artificial intelligence can be used meaningfully in teaching and learning.
Internationalisation and intercultural learning
We want our students and staff to gain international experience, develop intercultural competences and learn from people in other countries. We have several partnerships in Europe and also cooperate with a vocational college in Rwanda, Africa.
Student responsibility
Our school cafeteria is run by students from BVJ and BF 1, giving them the opportunity to gain practical experience and take responsibility.
Health and well-being
The physical and mental well-being of our students and staff is another important area of our school development.
Erasmus+ and international cooperation
We are interested in building long-term partnerships with schools and organisations in Europe and beyond.
We believe that international cooperation gives students and staff the opportunity to exchange ideas, discover different educational systems and learn from each other.
BBS Kirn – vocational education with a strong focus on practical learning, international cooperation and future-oriented skills.
